Untold Secrets - Part 12

Nodine gives a nod and then turns back to you.  “You must wait until they throw you in, not before.  Do you understand?”

A swirl of thoughts hit your mind, but the details, they are too much.  You see images, shapes, places, but without reference, Nodine’s language is like a dream.

He realizes what is going on and sighs.  “If only there was more time.”

There is a sound in the hallway.

“Quickly now, let us be short.  To control the crystal, think of a color.  That is the key.  The nearness of another armband can influence, but as you gain skill, it becomes a matter will.  Do you understand?”

His eyes say he must go.   “Find the shard you seek.  Find the cave I know you saw.”

Cave?  What cave?  You stare as Nodine turns to go.  “But, it is not enough to go on!”

Nodine smiles.  “Perhaps, perhaps not.  Whatever you do, do not control the crystal while in the presence of the guard.  If you do, you will be discovered, and all will be lost.”

That wasn’t one bit ominous!

Untold Secrets - Part 11

A metallic ping sounds.  As you look up, a golden armband rolls into the room.  Someone passing by tossed it in.  You've never seen the fish-like creatures move that fast, so what was it?

The armband stops within a foot of you.  Checking to make sure no guards are watching, you pick it up.  It looks like what the guards wear to control the color of the crystal.  A closer look reveals writing around the inside, but what it says you have no idea.

Bob swoops closer and reads the words, though what he says makes no sense to you.  When he sees your face, he laughs.  “This band controls not only the crystal, but allows you to know other things as well.  You can communicate like the fish-like creatures do.”

“Telepathy?  Wow, but how?”

“If you call it that, I’m not the one to ask.  All I know is without the bracelet, you can receive but not send.”

A fish-like creature comes to the door.  You recognize him as your guide.  It is more of a feeling than anything else.  Could it be the influence of the armband?

“Hide that under your clothes, around your arm.  The others must not see it.”

You place it on your upper arm under the sleeve.  The moment it touches your skin, a cool feeling of relief floods through you.

“I am Nodine,” the creature calls in your mind.  “Our time is short, so I must speak quickly.”
You jump as the words come in loud and clear, picked up by your mind alone.

"What's he saying?"  Bob flies around in excited circles, knowing something is going on.

You motion at Bob.  “Shhh!”

Nodine smiles with a slight chuckle, and then looks at Bob.

“Wow,” Bob hears Nodine’s words, “okay I get it!”   He holds his hands up.  “No time, but it is really cool!  You don’t have one in pixie size do you?”  Bob grins.

Untold Secrets - Part 10

There is a dripping to your right as you repeat the guard’s words. “Not all of us agree with the council.”

“What was that?” Bob The Pixie comes back around. “Where did you hear that?”

“The guard, he just told me.” It had to be telepathy!

“I didn’t hear---” A grin spreads over Bob’s face. “Ah, I see, no wonder!” Bob ponders a moment. “So they are setting up a coup d’etat and you are the catalyst!”

The knowledge makes you exhale. “A revolution?” In the stillness that follows you look around, listening to the dripping coming from a place on the wall. It drops down into a natural bowl, containing water.

“Something has apparently been dirtying the pond, and it has sparked revolution.” Bob nods as he follows your gaze. “That would explain the throbbing in your palm, and why we came here when the wand hit us.”

“So it wasn’t an accident,” the throbbing is on your mind. “But what of Be?”

Bob reluctantly answers, “She has a good heart, but her way of going about it is not always sound.”

“Like trying to remove the--” You look at your palm and remember how she had tried to force you. “Was she trying to cut off my hand?” The idea is frightening.

“I would hope not,” Bob shakes, “but when it comes to protecting her people, there is no end to what she might do. If she felt too desperate, she might even make a deal with the dark lady herself.”

Untold Secrets - Part 9

Untold Secrets - Part 9

“But,” Bob The Pixie begins, “what did I say?”
Your only ally comes forward.  “It is a sad state, but do not give up hope.  There may yet be good in this.”

“Good?” you laugh.  “If you say so.”

“Unfortunately for you, your friend here mentioned the Naga.  They guard one of our watery entrances.  Once it was known you violated their property, the decision was made.”

You turn to stare at Bob.

Bob blushes.  “You wanted to leave didn’t you?”

Two guards come up on either side.  One waves a fin toward the necklace.  The crystal turns a murky brown.  Your arm muscles freeze, and while you can still speak and move your feet, nothing else will work.  This was getting very annoying!

Bob flies around you unhampered and unhindered.  “But it wasn’t the humans fault!”

“Take them now!” another fish-like creature calls.  “Remove them from our sight!”

You are pushed, and you don’t like it.  You are right at the edge of saying something, when you notice your palm is throbbing.  Each step you make, the feeling is faster, like a Geiger counter encountering radiation.  It is very strange.

“Bob,” you whisper.

He flies nearer, and lands on your shoulder with a sigh.  “I really am sorry.  I truly didn’t know.”

You shake your head.  “Didn’t you say my mission was to find these shard thingies to contain the dark lady?”

Bob nods, and then glances toward your palm.  “You feel something?”  There is a light in his eyes.

The guards stop at an archway, and shove you in roughly.  Bob flies off your shoulder.  He swings back around with a red face, and threatens pixie dust.  “Talk about rude!”

“No Bob, wait.”  At the guard’s push, the crystal around your neck resumes its green glow.  Your arms are free.

As you turn back toward the archway, only one guard is still staring in.  He gives a single nod, and you hear a voice in your head.  “Not all of us agree with the council.”

The guard walks away.

Untold Secrets - Part 8

Their fins in the tubs of water, create a splashing motion and the court begins, though how they are discussing is beyond you.  You see nods, turns of heads, expressions of agreement, frowns, and the occasional big splash, but not one word is spoken.

The word ‘telepathy’ goes through your brain.  Could be, maybe, but the expressions on their faces  do not look toward your favor.

The voice of Bob The Pixie calls behind your ear.  “You’re in good spirits I see!”

“Bob!”

Your voice stops the unspoken conversation as all the fish-like creatures turn to stare at you.

You cough.  “Er, sorry.”

As they resume their private conversation, you turn back to Bob in a quieter voice.  “Where have you been, and why in the world did you tell me to jump into freezing water?”

“Tsk, tsk, tsk,” Bob chides.  “It saved your life!”

“And now it hangs on a thread,” you mumble back.  “I have no idea what is going on, but I don’t think they like warm-blooded mammals here.”

“I’ll fix that,” Bob grins.  He leaps off your shoulder and moves closer to the council.  “If you’ll excuse me---”

When no one pays him mind, he raises his voice and claps his hands loudly.  “May I have your attention please!”

The council stops, all eyes staring.  Only your guide seems to be amused.

“I just wanted say it is not this poor, warm-blooded, human, creature’s fault for being here.  It was I who told it to jump, for we needed to escape from the Naga above.  You see---”

The fish-like creature furtherst to the right stands up.  “Enough, you have most certainly decided the case.”

Bob looks around curious.  “I have?  Wow, that was easy.”  He turns back to you and winks.  “All in pixie’s job description!”

“Seize them,” the same creature continues.  “They will both be tossed in when the water is high.”

Untold Secrets - Part 7

The fish-like creature is back, and stares at you thoughtfully.  In his arms are your clothes, dried and neatly folded.  “I see you are better.”

You swallow, while still attempting to stay on your feet, but the dizziness makes it hard to focus.  You point at the ruby.

“And intuitive as well,” he nods.  “A device for your protection; nothing more.  Once you leave our domain, it can be removed.”

Stepping closer, he waves a fin adorned by a bracelet close to the jewel.  The color changes from red to green.  A bright green emerald now hangs around your neck and the dizziness passes.

“Thank you.  You said ‘can be removed’.  Is there a reason why I wouldn’t?”

“There are many reasons, but you will find those soon enough.”  He hands you your clothes.  “When you are changed, the council is ready.  I shall wait outside.”  He turns to head back out the doorway.

Placing the clothes upon the small tray, you reach up for a better look at the necklace, but, the moment before your hand touches it, nausea hits.

You quickly move your hand away.  If he thinks you want to keep this, he is sorely mistaken!  You start to dress, careful to avoid the gem.

As if on cue, he returns as you finish.  You two are alone as he leads you down the hall.

Footsteps echo; the slightest movement creates a noise.  You don’t see anyone else until two huge, gold, doors appear with carvings on their surface.  Most of them show sea creatures, but it is the one at the end that catches your attention.  It shows a gem in the middle of a cave.  Beside the doors, two fish-like guards hold tridents.

As you approach, one of the guards step forward; the trident he carries taps loudly on the floor.   “Sir,” the guard bows, “enter please.”

Your guide bows as the two gold doors whoosh back, and the air from the hallway equalizes with the air inside the room, delivering a sweet pungent odor.  There are six other fish-like creatures inside the room, lounging in tubs, not unlike the one you had recovered in.

“You may sit there,” the being with you points with a fin.  There is a small platform with a crudely made chair, probably created just for you.  The being then moves to the center tub.   As he arrives, a guard steps up and announces, “The trial of said warm-blooded creature is officially in session!”

“Trial, right,” you mumble out of hearing, but it is not out of hearing, and one of the fish-like creatures responds immediately.

“Warm-blooded, cocky statements will not help your case.  You invaded our waters, not we yours.  Hold your tongue, or we will remove it for you.”

Sheesh, who knew they had such good ears!

Untold Secrets - Part 6

Your eyes blur; you can no longer fight the sleep.  “But why?”

The creature chuckles.  “They are afraid of you, warm-blooded, but do not fear.  I have endeavored to help you.”

His words drift away as a strange vision comes.  There is a cave with a jewel glowing at its center.  The throbbing in your palm pulls you back from sleep.

The creature is gone, but assorted fruit is placed on a small tray beside you.  The hunger in your stomach jumps to the forefront, and without waiting a moment longer, you begin to eat.

It is delicious.  A combination of flavors unlike any you have tasted.  It is not until it is all gone that you wonder exactly what it was.

The shaking has stopped; the drowsiness has evaporated.  If what the creature said was true, you may have reached normal body temperature, and if that is true, it is time to get out.

Looking around, the room is empty of any other being.  If they are so concerned about you being here, where is the guard?

As you push up with your arms, a wave of dizziness hits you.  It takes a moment of holding on for your head to clear.  Slipping from the tub, you are forced to grab onto the side, fighting against an unseen force.  Your eyes catch sight of a sparkling ruby hanging from a chain around your neck.  You can’t remember where it came from, but when you attempt to touch it, the dizziness gets worse.

The words of the creature echo back through your mind, ‘They are afraid of you’.  The necklace is the guard.

Untold Secrets - Part 5

There are voices in your head, not the normal voices, but of a language you’ve never heard.  Despite the initial reaction, you’re mind begins to make sense of the words.

“Human?  Here?” the fright in the voice is obvious.  “You should have left it to drown!”

A shudder shakes your body, and you realize you are in a tub of warm water without any clothes, right before the voices pass from hearing.  The heaviness of sleep hits you again, and you see strange images before your eyes.  A watery expanse, glistening walls of white, a stream whose bottom drops into a huge cavern of mercreatures.

There was nothing you could do, the cold had so gripped you.  Looking through eyes which had slowly darkened, you remember these images right before you . . . froze to death?

And now you are here.  Your eyes shoot open, and you stare about the glowing cavern.  Algae of green luminosity is the source of the light.  You shake violently a second time, and realize you don’t feel so cold inside.

A fish-like creature with two feet-like protrusions waddles toward you, and you get the impression of a wise old man.  “Do you know what is happening to you human, hmm?”

He reaches over with one fin, and lays it on your arm.  It is cool to the touch.  He nods.  “Very good, your body temperature is coming up nicely.”

“Then why do I,”  you shake violently, unable to talk until it is over, “sh-shake?”

Though somewhat strange, the voice is very patient.  “As mammals warm up, their bodies shake violently as they come back up to their normal temperature.  This phenomena happens in warm-blooded creatures.”

Sleep strikes again; yet knowing that you have someone to answer questions, you fight against it.

“You really should rest.”

Shaking your head, you try to wake up.  “Why am I here?”

The creature looks at you, obviously thinking before he answers.  “You were found floating in waters no human is permitted to enter.  The council is deciding whether to throw you back.”

Untold Secrets - Part 4

The shocking cold feels like icy needles stabbing all around.  You are grateful that the glow on your palm has not gone out.  The clear, icy, water shows you a stream much deeper, and larger, than you previously imagined.

The current grabs you, but it is only at the surface.  As you sink down further, the minerals and rock forming the sides glow and sparkle in directions.

Somewhere above you see Bob The Pixie, though you cannot really be sure.  Spears strike the surface of the water above, but the current is your friend, carrying them away faster than they can reach you.

In a sudden burst of warmth, you realize you are freezing to death.  The cold has seeped past the skin, grabbing hold of the muscles.  Your heart is pounding in an effort to keep your brain warm, but you are now unable to swim.  What little oxygen remains in your lungs hangs as you feel a fog settle in your brain.

Sleep.  You fight to stay awake, but it is too late.  What was Bob thinking?  Why did you listen when you knew how cold it could be?

As you turn slowly to your side, you see a shining light at the bottom of the stream.  It glistens as if from spires of white, but you are sure it is a trick as your brain falls asleep.

Untold Secrets - Part 3

“It’s the Naga!” Bob The Pixie abruptly hollers in your ear.

You jump.  “Bob, where did you go!”  A spear zips by as you duck beside the rock.

“Unfortunately, Be’s wand threw things off a little.  I heard you calling, but could not answer.  At least I found you.”

“And Be?”  Two more spears fly by, and the Naga are getting closer.

“No time to explain!  Jump!”

You look around, but can only see the stream of water.  “Where?”

“Into the water of course.”

Despite the Naga bearing down upon you, you reach out and touch the water.  “It’s freezing!”

“Exactly,” Bob is giddy, “they’ll never follow you there!  Cold-blooded and all that.”  Bob nudges a spear in the air with magic so it misses you.

“But.”

“Go!”  He points.  “I can’t hold them off forever!”

You leap into the water.

Untold Secrets - Part 2

The throb gets faster.  Each time you think about the things in the dark, it speeds up some more.  If only you had light to see!

You clinch your fist, and feel the familiar sting forcing your fingers apart.  Light flashes in all directions, but instead of going out, your palm continues to glow.

The slithering stops.  As your eyes focus, you see the truth of your circumstance.  There is a stream; just around the rock which bars your way, it flows past quickly.  You are in a cave; the intensity of the reflections send brightened colors in all directions.

And the snakes?  They are not snakes at all, but snakes with green humanoid bodies.  As their eyes adjust, you hear a thrill cry.  Your light had caused temporary blindness, but now they are running at you, spears held ready.

Untold Secrets - Part 1

The sand makes you sneeze. Despite opening your eyes, all you see is blackness. The very fact you sneezed means you can’t possibly be dead, but where you are, you cannot say. “Bob?”

The area around you echoes back a thousand voices like your own, and they are all calling Bob. That at least gives you an idea of what you are in. It is some sort of cave, but where?

You start to stand, but feel the poke of something from above. Short cave? Long cave? The absence of everyone else, the idea of being in a cave with no light, and the thought of not knowing where you are all combine into terror. You become aware of the throbbing in your palm; it seems to match your heart beat.

“No, I will be calm.”

The echoes reinforce the statement, but do not make you feel better. “Bob!” However, with your refusal to panic, both heart beat and throb begin to slow.

You hear a sigh. Were it not for the echoes, you would have missed it entirely. “Bob The Pixie!”

As you speak his name, you realize the throb in your hand has dropped to almost nothing, but it is still there. You think about Bob’s reaction to Be, and her attempt to remove what she said was a mistake.

“Bob!”

The sigh again, but this time, despite the echoes, you have a better idea of its location. Tentatively you reach out, moving your hands slowly in case you hit something.

You drop to your knees and call again; there are more sighs. Inch by inch you crawl across the cave floor.

You bump into some sort of rock. It does not cut you, but had you hit it much harder, it could have. It is cold to the touch and moist.

You become aware of dripping, along with the slight sound of gurgling water. The cave is below the water table, and running water normally means an active, natural, aqueduct.

There are two sighs now, no, three. They multiplying and getting louder by the moment. No, those aren’t sighs. They are slithering sounds. Have you appeared in a den of snakes?

What Doesn't Kill You - Part 29 ( Continued in 'Untold Secrets')

“Well,” she looks flabbergasted, “I can’t very well show you unless I remove it, now can I?  Hold out the palm!”

Bob The Pixie, looking puzzled, begins to speed up as your begin to extend your hand.

“There now,” Be waits as if with all the time in the world.  “That’s better!  Now, hold still; this won’t hurt a bit!”

“No,” Bob shouts, “don’t let her touch it!”

Before you can pull your palm back, she raises the wand and it begins to descend.  The sparkles are matching to the throb.  It draws your eyes with a feeling of warmth.

Bob slams into Be, knocking the wand from her hand.  It launches up into the air and drops down straight for you.

Grabbing Be tightly, he flies back toward the wand, trying to catch it in time; in time, that is, to slam into you.  Between the fae, pixie, you, and the wand, there is a brilliant flash of rainbow colors.  A moment later, all three of you are gone.

What Doesn't Kill You - Part 28

Bob leans toward Be to read upside down.  She glares at him.

“You show me yours and I’ll show you mine,” she growls.

He grins sheepishly, and takes a step back, making sure his pixie dust is close.

You can’t wait any longer.  “Oh my, what?”

Be looks up with somber eyes.  “It’s seems we made a mistake.”  The look on her face worries you.

“On the gift you mean?”

Be nods and swallows, as she snaps her fingers.  You float to the ground.

“So, I don’t have the ability to find whatever it is?”

“Oh, you’ve got that, no worries!” Be gives a fake smile and points toward a spot not far from you.
Glittering in the rubble is a small blue crystal shard.  The moment your eyes see it, you realize your  palm is still throbbing, just much more pleasant than up in the air.

Dusting yourself off, you stand up, and move toward the shard.  You can sense it, and it seems to sense you.  As you pick it up, a tingle goes through your body, ending at your palm.  Without taking your eyes off, you ask, “What now?”

Be floats over to you.  “When all the pieces are collected, the dark lady’s spirit will be imprisoned forever.  That is your mission.  Find the pieces and save our world.”  A pleasant smile spreads across her face.

You nod, as you watch rainbow colors shoot through the crystal.  “I got that.  What I mean is, what about all the oh my’s you were quoting?”

Be’s face goes red.  “I was hoping you’d forget about that.”

Bob The Pixie starts in your direction.

“But I didn’t,” you smile, “and like any red-blooded human, I need to know.  What did you do?”

“Very well,” the redness in Be's cheeks gets worse.  “I’ll just have to show you.  Hold out your palm.”  Be produces a small wand from which tiny glitters spin off of their own accord.  “Perhaps it will be easier to fix than I thought.  I do so hate surgery.”

You abruptly pull back the palm.  “Surgery?”

What Doesn't Kill You - Part 27

You throw your arms up in front of your face as the ground comes up to meet you.

Be snaps her fingers.  “And don’t think you can get out of telling me.  I want answers!”

When you do not hit, you slowly unwrap your arms and open your eyes.  You are suspended about a foot above the ground, hovering in the air.

“Be,” you swallow, “did I ever tell you how much I really love the fae right now?”

“And no sucking up!” Be warns.  “I will not be dissuaded.  Now, how?”  She stares into your closest eye.

Bob The Pixie slips between you two.  “Now, now,” he waves Be back, “mind your manners!”

Be points a finger a Bob.  “You said this human knew what was done!”

“Did not!”

“Did too!”

“Did not!”

“Did too!”

You touch the ground and push, but it does not help.  You continue to float right where you are.

Bob growls back, “Did too!”, and abruptly stops.

Be puts on a smug smile as Bob shakes his finger at her.

“You just tried to confuse me, but when I think back,” he gazes up at the sky a moment.  “Ha!” he points his finger at Be.  “I only thought the human knew, and you turned it around!”  Bob learns toward you and whispers.  “It’s okay, whisper to me what you did.”

You take a deep breath, and let it out slowly.  “Bob, if I knew what I did, don’t you think I’d want to tell you both?”

There is silence as both pixie and fae think on that one.

“But if you don’t know,” Be moves forward, “then what did happened?”

You explain to both.

Be’s face goes pale.  “Oh my!”  Out of a tiny bag she pulls a tiny fae book.  Opening it, she quickly flips through the pages.  “Oh my, oh my!”

What Doesn't Kill You - Part 26

Be appears from nowhere, scolding you as you fall.  “What did you do?”

“Me?” you manage, not really focusing on the conversation.   The wind is whizzing by you as it pulls at your clothes.  “I didn’t do anything.”

“Oh yes you did!” she jumps right back.  “You did something, and I want to know what!”

With only seconds before hitting the ground, this conversation does not make sense.

“Ho, ho!” Bob The Pixie comes to the other side.  “Well done, well done indeed!”  He shoves debris  out of your way, clearing the path.

Be points at Bob.  “See, even he knows you did it!”

“Thanks  Bob,” you give a stressfully frown, although you are not sure if you are thanking him for backing up Be’s story, or clearing the path so you can fall easier.  Maybe both?

“You’re welcome,” he grins.

Be growls, “Will you two listen to me?  I need to know what you did!”

The ground is coming up fast.  There's no more time.   You scream, “Somebody help me!”

What Doesn't Kill You - Part 25

There is a roar around you as your feet lift off the ground.  You are flying in a maelstrom of debris, pulled ever higher up the torrent of air.

The face in the cloud is grinning with glee.  From somewhere behind, you sense Bob, but where he is you do not know.

A tree limb flies by; you can feel the leaves as it passes.  Dust and dirt are circulating in patches held here and there, as mini-funnels seem to help make up the whole.

The throb in your hand is now unbearable.  You make a fist, biting the nails down into the palm to control the pain.  A burning sensation fills your fingers.  In totally surprise, you flick the palm open.
There is a flash of light, all sound stops, and you begin to fall.  Where is the wind?  Where is the funnel?

Flipping over you can see ground.  It is coming at you fast.  The face in the cloud is gone.  Except for the damage that was done, you would swear it had never existed.

Nothing makes sense, and you are speeding toward the ground.

What Doesn't Kill You - Part 24

A maniacal laugh comes out of the wind.  Its voice is all around you.  “So, you think to run and hide, but find you are unable.  Good.  Come to me and make it so much more sweet.”

Debris flies by more quickly.  The funnel is ramping up, and your forward progress has stopped.  As the funnel moves through the land, trees rip up by their roots, tossed to the side like toothpicks.

There is a roar behind you, and a huge stone launches toward the funnel.  A glance behind shows an angry troll.

“You destroy home,” the Troll lashes out.  “I destroy you!”

Another stone launches crashing down at the foot of the funnel, but it keeps coming, and then another and another in a long cascade of strikes.  They begin to form a wall of sorts which helps to buffet the wind.  You can now press forward.  The throb in your palm is almost unbearable.

Bob notices you start to favor it; there is a twinkle in his eye.  “To the wall!” he shouts.

You hear him but barely, the roar has grown so loud.  Pushing against the force of the wind, you see the pixies about to attack, but if the funnel turns now . . .

“Hey, you want me, come get me!”  You throw yourself at the funnel.

What Doesn't Kill You - Part 23

Straight.  It is then you realize what you’re doing.  Just as Be launched into the terrible winds of the funnel, you are prepared to do the same.  Is that how it’s going to end?  Snuffed out in a magical world that no one will ever know?

The pixies have gathered en masse now, forming their lines.  They are ready to attack, but what can they do?  Bob had faith in them, but why now?

The funnel’s winds come closer; they rip at your clothes and hair, teasing with threat.  The throbbing in your palm has gotten worse, but it is of no matter.  You will help these fae if it’s the last thing you do.  Unfortunately, that may just be the case.

Bob’s familiar voice shows up on your shoulder.  “Did you miss me?” he grins.

“Bob!”  Somehow his presence makes the load a little lighter, but your thoughts shift to the fae.  “Is Be okay?”  The throb in your palm is worse.

“A little hurt pride, but none the worse for wear; she definitely made it.”  His voice becomes animated.  “The dark lady doesn’t want her anyway.  It wants us!”

This time you know he’s smiling.  A slap of wind almost knocks you off your feet.

“Bob, if I didn’t know better, I’d swear you were an adrenaline junky!”

“Don’t you feel it,” he grins.  “The excitement, the thrill, the magic!”

“Magic?”  A stick flies by as you duck, and then another and another.

“Yes magic!” he booms out.  “It’s waiting, just waiting, for the right time to strike!”

Your eyes follow the tall funnel; it is very close now.  “Which better be soon!”

What Doesn't Kill You - Part 22

In midstride, the troll slams down both feet, but the momentum is too much.  He tumbles forward flipping upside down.

Your vision swirls as you are thrown to the side.  You roll, remembering to tuck and duck like you were taught in school.  Tiny stones and sticks bite into the clothes on your back, and then you feel something thud against the side of your head.

Stars in the shape of fae swim lazily before your eyes, despite your attempt to clear them.  From far away you remember a stormy wind, a troll under a bridge, and huge crash landing.  There’s even a glimpse of Be launching herself at the funnel.  Be!

You try to stand, but you cannot stay on your feet, and your palm has begun to throb.  Though you can vaguely see the face in the clouds, it is still there.  You rise unsteadily, focus on its direction, and stagger toward it.

The cloud face tracks you with an evil grin.  Had it even paid attention to Be?  You can’t see the fae’s light; you can’t spot Bob for that matter.  The only thing for certain is that the funnel is moving straight toward you.

What Doesn't Kill You - Part 21

Bob The Pixie’s voice rings loudly.  “Out, now!”

Before you can respond, the troll launches to its feet, bolting toward the exit.  Lightning flashes as thunder rolls, striking the ground outside.  There is no rain, but the face in the cloud is smug with delight.

You shade your eyes as you leave the bridge, still able to keep your grip on the troll’s ear.  The troll wavers back and forth.  The winds are so strong, it is a wonder it can stay on its feet.

Something is happening behind the cloud face; you can see a gathering of fae.  In mass they rise from the trees around, fighting the wind, struggling to get into formation.

“They need time,” Bob shouts.  “We’ve got to keep the clouds attention!”

You nod absently, realizing what that means.  If the fae couldn’t stand up to the funnel before, how are you going to now?

“It’s my people,” Be on your shoulder shouts.  “We shall attack!”  The fae launches toward the funnel.

You shout into the wind, “No, not alone,” but you know she is already too far away.  You can see her tiny light being battered by the winds.  You grab hold of the troll's ear, and shout as loud as you can.  “Stop!”

What Doesn't Kill You - Part 20

It’s easy now; after all, you are gliding on the winds.

The face in the clouds catches glimpses of you; the evil is ready to pounce. It tries to alter your course, but there are only so many things it can do.

You slide through the air, as gracefully as a flying squirrel, swoop near the troll, and grab the first thing in reach, his ear. Now you know what Bob The Pixie and the fae Be must feel like.

A glance inside the troll’s ear turns your stomach. You never realized how disgusting ear wax could look. Your face reddens; Bob and the fae could be staring into yours right now.

The troll is too busy holding onto the ledge to stop you, though he does try to shake his head. You stay glued, hands gripping those earlobes with all your might.

A loud cracking sound fills the area around you. At first you think it is thunder, that is, until you look up.

What Doesn't Kill You - Part 18

You try to grab the ceiling, but there is nothing to hold on to.  The air which so gently held you up begins to toss you to and fro.  Between the bounces you see the smug, evil, face in the clouds.  It knows just what it’s doing.

Bob The Pixie slams into the side of your head, and for a moment you see stars.   He clings to your hair in a desperate attempt to gain control, and then shouts in your ear.  “There, head that way!”

His loud voice clears your head and you focus on the direction he is pointing.  It is back toward the troll.

“Are you crazy?  That’s a troll!  On top of that, how do you think I’m going to get there?”

The winds give a sickening lunge; just as you think you’re going to hit the ground, you shoot back up.  A queasiness grows in your stomach.

Something else hits you square between the shoulder blades, and you jump.  Tiny hands crinkle your shirt as they climb up your back to stand on the shoulder Bob isn’t on.  As they pull your hair, why do they have to grab your hair, the fae’s voice shouts in your ear.  “That way!”

“Okay you two,” you try to stay civil.  “If you are both so smart, how do I get 'that' way?”  The wind whips, sending you upward.

“On my mark!” Bob yells, ringing your ear.  “One, two, three!”

The wind drops you toward the ground, and you realize he has been watching the pattern.  It is up, down, up, down.  You have been so busy fighting the urge not to get sick, you have not paid attention.  As you come within range, you change the position of your feet, and kick off straight toward the troll.

What Doesn't Kill You - Part 17

Whipping talons of wind grab at your feet and ankles.  Rocks and debris are pulled up to hover in the air.  The troll fights against the wind, letting you go and grabbing for the rock ledge beneath him.  Instead of tumbling to the ground, you roll, and then rise into the air to hover yourself.

You float going neither up nor down.  The funnel’s presence over the bridge has caused a strange magical effect; you appear to levitate.  Using your hands, you turn in the opposite direction.

The evil face in the sky is trying to glare in.  Though it took out an entire fae gathering, what it really wants is to catch you and Bob.  The noise lessens, but not the wind.

“Ain’t gonna happen!”  Bob’s voice declares over your right shoulder.  Though the wind is still loud, he is close enough to hear.

“Bob!” your voice fills the area under the bridge.  “I’m mean, Bob,” you say more quietly.  “What happened to you and the fae?”

The little fae drifts over.  “I’m here,” she smiles, turns to look at the face in the sky, and sticks her tongue out.  Her body shimmers with neon rage.  “Bad cloud,” she shouts.  “Surely you can do better than that!”

The sky rumbles deeply; the winds outside the bridge increase.  Your body begins to bounce, causing your eyes widen.  “I so wish you hadn’t done that!”

What Doesn't Kill You - Part 16

“This way!” Bob points toward a stone bridge.  “It’s the only place we might be safe!”

It makes sense.  In your world going under bridges is always a good idea during a tornado: the lower the better.  You dash across the road, slide down the gully, and leap under the bridge right into the arms of a very large troll.

“Bob!” you try calling out.  He was behind you, they both were, but you can no longer see him as the funnel hits the bridge.   A roar of sound pelts your ears, debris flies in all directions, and the dust is so thick you can hardly breathe.  Using your sleeve, you hold it over your nose and mouth, waiting for the storm to pass.

The troll is either too stunned by the funnel, or too stunned that you had simply jumped into his arms.  You can’t tell which yet…

What Doesn't Kill You - Part 15

Colors spin in all directions.  A cry of a million tiny voices echoes across the sky.  One tiny piece of light flies toward you.  It shoots through branches, knocks through leaves, and finally hits the ground at your feet.  As the dust clears, you pick up the small, little, fae.

“She’s not breathing,” your eyes go wide.  “Bob, what do we do?  She needs CPR, but how do we give it to her?  She’s so small!”

"CPR?"  Bob just looks at you.

How do you explain it when a fae’s life is on the line?

As you try to find a way, he waves at you to give him room, goes to the fae, and places a hand on her chest.  “She’s breathing,” he assures, “but faintly.”  He then gives a mischievous grin.  “She’s not going to like this.”  He pulls out a pinch of pixie dust and sprinkles it over her nose.

The fae gasps.  “Poison, I’ve been poisoned!”  She coughs, trying to clear her lungs, opens her eyes, and realizes there is an audience.  “O-Oh, I’m sorry, I don’t know.”  She spots Bob’s grin and notices his hand in his pouch.  “You didn’t!”

“It worked didn’t it?” Bob chuckles.  “Besides, fae and pixie dust is pretty close to same sparkle.”

“It is not,” she turns to stare at the storm, “but perhaps this conversation would be safer somewhere else.”

The storm has turned, and is coming straight for the three of you.  Everyone begins to run.

What Doesn't Kill You - Part 14

“Come on,” Bob The Pixie has to shout to be heard.  Thunder booms again.  “We better get out while we can!”

To the right, you can see a bright light of multiple colors approaching the impending storm.  It has to be the fae.  It is such a tiny force against a storm that large; your heart goes out to the plight they face.

“How far does it go?” you shout to Bob.  Thunder blasts again.

“What?”

“How far does the dark lady’s reach extend?  What worlds can she influence?”  The wind whips around you.

“Nobody knows,” Bob wipes something from his eye.

It is getting harder to see.

“But we know her heart.  You and I stopped her once by surprise.  She won’t make that mistake again!”

The fae light is at the foot of storm, fighting to hold together.  A funnel begins to form in the clouds, and you watch the cloud formation hiss, showing a face with fanged teeth.

“They’ll never make it!” you shout.  “That storm will eat them alive!”

As the funnel touches the ground, dust, dirt, and debris shoot off in all directions.  As if sucked through a straw, anything touched is drawn in.  A moment later, the funnel strikes the fae.

What Doesn't Kill You - Part 13

Bob The Pixie steps forward.  “You have made your decision and that is that.  Come.”  He reaches out and takes your finger.  Be grabs another one on the same hand.

“No, we must have help!”

“Nay,” Bob glares, “the decision is made.  We respect it.”  He pulls you in his direction.

“No,” Be fights the other way, “you must help!”

“Nay!”

“No!”

“Nay!”

“No!”

“Come on you two!”  You pull your hand away from both.  “What is this, tug of war on my hand?”

They both stare at you blankly.

You wave it away.  “The point is, it’s my decision not yours,” you point at Bob.  “And certainly not yours,” you point at Be.

The fae takes a step back, as if she had just been slapped; it makes you cringe.  What happens if you make an enemy of the fae?  There were stories of some very bad things!

“Very well,” Be turns away.  “Ladies,” all the pixies gathered came to attention, “prepare to do battle!”

Tiny sparkles of various hues and colors shoot off in all directions.  The evil spot in the sky is getting closer.

“Bob,” Be calls without turning around, “please lead this human back.  We don’t want the help.”  With that, Be zips toward the storm front.

Lightning cracks the sky, thunder rolls, and the wind begins to howl.  Treetops whip their branches as the fae houses begin to shake.

What Doesn't Kill You - Part 12

For a brief moment you see the dark lady’s eyes and remember the horror at her approach.  Your skin begins to prickle.

“Well?”  Bob The Pixie catches your eye.  “You have been given a gift from the holly wood tree, but you will not be forced to do this.  If you choose, I can take you home.”

Home.  It is safe at home.  You look back at Bob; his face is sympathetic.  If you chose to, he would not think any less.  Yet, the very thought of going home seems unappealing; almost.

Those teeth on the dark lady were real, and the last thing you want is to encounter them again.  You blurt the words out.  “I’m sorry, but I can’t do it.”

The chattering of fae goes silent.  In the silence, you can hear the beat of your own heart.  Though it took great effort to say the words, in the end you knew it was for the best.

Be moves quickly towards you.  “Oh, but you must!”  She looks around in fear.  “You must or all is in great peril.”

For the first time you notice the world of the pixies is not quite so bright, the lights they carry have dimmed down, and there is an evil patch of color in the sky.  Out of the darkness lightning flashes followed by a terrible crash of thunder.

“You see,” Be points at the evil in the sky, “it has already begun!”

What Doesn't Kill You - Part 11

They lead you to a shade tree.  A canopied bed of silk sheets and lavender trim is already waiting.  You sit down on the bed in wonder.

“Sleep.”  The fae with the purple light motions toward the bed.  “Rest.”

There is a popping sound behind you, and you hear the voice of Bob The Pixie.  “No you don’t!”

“Bob,” your eyelids are extremely heavy, “I’m really tired!”

“Nope,” he shakes his head, and snaps his fingers.  You open your eyes wide as the sleep vanishes.

He grins.  “What can be done with a spell can be undone.  Especially a sleep spell.”  He glares at the fae,“This is my human not yours,”  and turns back to you.  “The holly wood tree can be a portal to many places, but it sent you here for a specific gift, not to sleep.”

The fae with the purple light comes forward.  “Bob The Pixie, you have no right!”

“I am the guardian of this human,” he warns.  “It is my right.  If you have a gift, then you must give it.”

A murmur passes through the assembled fae.   The one with the purple light comes toward you.  “I am Bela Lugosi, but you may call me Be.”  She curtsies.  “Please, take no offense at our offering to rest.  It was only for your good.  However,” she narrows her eyes at the pixie, “Bob is correct.  It is my place to give you a gift.”

A second fae approaches, carrying a single purple petal with a lime-green throat.

“Please hold out your hand.”

You glance at Bob who gives a silent nod.  As you hold your hand out, palm up, the fae lays the petal in it.  Be sprinkles fae dust upon the petal, the fae begin to hum, and Be begins to sing.

“Sight uncanny comes to you, upon the petal clear.  It opens eyes to show surprise as magic items wander near.  Do not neglect the spell that’s set.  Do look and search the way.  The things it brings will open to your eyes a bright new day.”

As the words fade away, the petal dissolves absorbed into your skin.  You feel a tingling sensation as the magic takes hold.  With wonder in your eyes, you ask, “What did you do?”  For a moment you feel as if you could fly.

“You have been given a gift,” Be’s face glows with delight.  “A wondrous gift to fulfill a destiny.”

Bob clears his throat.  “And a mission,” he warns.  “The dark lady you met is not gone.  If you are willing to accept the challenge, then we must find the magic shards, track her down, and stop her from coming back into this world.  Are you willing to accept the challenge?”

What Doesn't Kill You - Part 10

The eyes of the tree stare into yours, beckoning you forward.  It is calm and serene, despite the attack of the skeletons.  You hear them approach, feel the hairs stand up on your body, but watch as your finger reaches toward the bark.

Bob The Pixie, diving from an attack, turns around and spots you.  “Wait!”

It is too late.  As you touch the tree, calmness settles in.  The tree offers peace and safety.  It appreciates you putting out the fire, and has chosen to give you a reward.

Music plays as the world you know fades from sight.  The skeletons are gone, and so is Bob.  You wheel around, trying to make some sense of what just happened.

In this place, it is nighttime.  You see the glow of tiny lights, shining in the distance.  There are flutters to your left and right.  As the flutters come closer, you see they are carrying tiny lanterns.  The beautiful wings of tiny fairies glow in the darkness.

“Welcome,” their voices call in chorus, “to the secret world that only we do know.  You have journeyed far and look so tired.  Would you not sit down and rest?”  Before you can blink, fireflies assemble in a ball of light not more than a foot away.

You feel the warmth, not so much as heat, but as love and goodwill.  It drives the exhaustion from your body, warming up your soul.  The air taste sweet; the trees sparkle in magic.  If you were here a thousand years, you could never tire of this place.

A thousand years, those thoughts make you think.  You remember the story of Rip Van Winkle who met up with mystical creatures and went to sleep for twenty years.  Could there really be truth in that story?

“Rest,” one of the fae with a beautiful purple light comes forward.  “You are tired and have faced many things.  You must rest for the journey is great.”
