What Doesn't Kill You - Part 21

Bob The Pixie’s voice rings loudly.  “Out, now!”

Before you can respond, the troll launches to its feet, bolting toward the exit.  Lightning flashes as thunder rolls, striking the ground outside.  There is no rain, but the face in the cloud is smug with delight.

You shade your eyes as you leave the bridge, still able to keep your grip on the troll’s ear.  The troll wavers back and forth.  The winds are so strong, it is a wonder it can stay on its feet.

Something is happening behind the cloud face; you can see a gathering of fae.  In mass they rise from the trees around, fighting the wind, struggling to get into formation.

“They need time,” Bob shouts.  “We’ve got to keep the clouds attention!”

You nod absently, realizing what that means.  If the fae couldn’t stand up to the funnel before, how are you going to now?

“It’s my people,” Be on your shoulder shouts.  “We shall attack!”  The fae launches toward the funnel.

You shout into the wind, “No, not alone,” but you know she is already too far away.  You can see her tiny light being battered by the winds.  You grab hold of the troll's ear, and shout as loud as you can.  “Stop!”

What Doesn't Kill You - Part 20

It’s easy now; after all, you are gliding on the winds.

The face in the clouds catches glimpses of you; the evil is ready to pounce. It tries to alter your course, but there are only so many things it can do.

You slide through the air, as gracefully as a flying squirrel, swoop near the troll, and grab the first thing in reach, his ear. Now you know what Bob The Pixie and the fae Be must feel like.

A glance inside the troll’s ear turns your stomach. You never realized how disgusting ear wax could look. Your face reddens; Bob and the fae could be staring into yours right now.

The troll is too busy holding onto the ledge to stop you, though he does try to shake his head. You stay glued, hands gripping those earlobes with all your might.

A loud cracking sound fills the area around you. At first you think it is thunder, that is, until you look up.

What Doesn't Kill You - Part 18

You try to grab the ceiling, but there is nothing to hold on to.  The air which so gently held you up begins to toss you to and fro.  Between the bounces you see the smug, evil, face in the clouds.  It knows just what it’s doing.

Bob The Pixie slams into the side of your head, and for a moment you see stars.   He clings to your hair in a desperate attempt to gain control, and then shouts in your ear.  “There, head that way!”

His loud voice clears your head and you focus on the direction he is pointing.  It is back toward the troll.

“Are you crazy?  That’s a troll!  On top of that, how do you think I’m going to get there?”

The winds give a sickening lunge; just as you think you’re going to hit the ground, you shoot back up.  A queasiness grows in your stomach.

Something else hits you square between the shoulder blades, and you jump.  Tiny hands crinkle your shirt as they climb up your back to stand on the shoulder Bob isn’t on.  As they pull your hair, why do they have to grab your hair, the fae’s voice shouts in your ear.  “That way!”

“Okay you two,” you try to stay civil.  “If you are both so smart, how do I get 'that' way?”  The wind whips, sending you upward.

“On my mark!” Bob yells, ringing your ear.  “One, two, three!”

The wind drops you toward the ground, and you realize he has been watching the pattern.  It is up, down, up, down.  You have been so busy fighting the urge not to get sick, you have not paid attention.  As you come within range, you change the position of your feet, and kick off straight toward the troll.

What Doesn't Kill You - Part 17

Whipping talons of wind grab at your feet and ankles.  Rocks and debris are pulled up to hover in the air.  The troll fights against the wind, letting you go and grabbing for the rock ledge beneath him.  Instead of tumbling to the ground, you roll, and then rise into the air to hover yourself.

You float going neither up nor down.  The funnel’s presence over the bridge has caused a strange magical effect; you appear to levitate.  Using your hands, you turn in the opposite direction.

The evil face in the sky is trying to glare in.  Though it took out an entire fae gathering, what it really wants is to catch you and Bob.  The noise lessens, but not the wind.

“Ain’t gonna happen!”  Bob’s voice declares over your right shoulder.  Though the wind is still loud, he is close enough to hear.

“Bob!” your voice fills the area under the bridge.  “I’m mean, Bob,” you say more quietly.  “What happened to you and the fae?”

The little fae drifts over.  “I’m here,” she smiles, turns to look at the face in the sky, and sticks her tongue out.  Her body shimmers with neon rage.  “Bad cloud,” she shouts.  “Surely you can do better than that!”

The sky rumbles deeply; the winds outside the bridge increase.  Your body begins to bounce, causing your eyes widen.  “I so wish you hadn’t done that!”

What Doesn't Kill You - Part 16

“This way!” Bob points toward a stone bridge.  “It’s the only place we might be safe!”

It makes sense.  In your world going under bridges is always a good idea during a tornado: the lower the better.  You dash across the road, slide down the gully, and leap under the bridge right into the arms of a very large troll.

“Bob!” you try calling out.  He was behind you, they both were, but you can no longer see him as the funnel hits the bridge.   A roar of sound pelts your ears, debris flies in all directions, and the dust is so thick you can hardly breathe.  Using your sleeve, you hold it over your nose and mouth, waiting for the storm to pass.

The troll is either too stunned by the funnel, or too stunned that you had simply jumped into his arms.  You can’t tell which yet…

What Doesn't Kill You - Part 15

Colors spin in all directions.  A cry of a million tiny voices echoes across the sky.  One tiny piece of light flies toward you.  It shoots through branches, knocks through leaves, and finally hits the ground at your feet.  As the dust clears, you pick up the small, little, fae.

“She’s not breathing,” your eyes go wide.  “Bob, what do we do?  She needs CPR, but how do we give it to her?  She’s so small!”

"CPR?"  Bob just looks at you.

How do you explain it when a fae’s life is on the line?

As you try to find a way, he waves at you to give him room, goes to the fae, and places a hand on her chest.  “She’s breathing,” he assures, “but faintly.”  He then gives a mischievous grin.  “She’s not going to like this.”  He pulls out a pinch of pixie dust and sprinkles it over her nose.

The fae gasps.  “Poison, I’ve been poisoned!”  She coughs, trying to clear her lungs, opens her eyes, and realizes there is an audience.  “O-Oh, I’m sorry, I don’t know.”  She spots Bob’s grin and notices his hand in his pouch.  “You didn’t!”

“It worked didn’t it?” Bob chuckles.  “Besides, fae and pixie dust is pretty close to same sparkle.”

“It is not,” she turns to stare at the storm, “but perhaps this conversation would be safer somewhere else.”

The storm has turned, and is coming straight for the three of you.  Everyone begins to run.

What Doesn't Kill You - Part 14

“Come on,” Bob The Pixie has to shout to be heard.  Thunder booms again.  “We better get out while we can!”

To the right, you can see a bright light of multiple colors approaching the impending storm.  It has to be the fae.  It is such a tiny force against a storm that large; your heart goes out to the plight they face.

“How far does it go?” you shout to Bob.  Thunder blasts again.

“What?”

“How far does the dark lady’s reach extend?  What worlds can she influence?”  The wind whips around you.

“Nobody knows,” Bob wipes something from his eye.

It is getting harder to see.

“But we know her heart.  You and I stopped her once by surprise.  She won’t make that mistake again!”

The fae light is at the foot of storm, fighting to hold together.  A funnel begins to form in the clouds, and you watch the cloud formation hiss, showing a face with fanged teeth.

“They’ll never make it!” you shout.  “That storm will eat them alive!”

As the funnel touches the ground, dust, dirt, and debris shoot off in all directions.  As if sucked through a straw, anything touched is drawn in.  A moment later, the funnel strikes the fae.

What Doesn't Kill You - Part 13

Bob The Pixie steps forward.  “You have made your decision and that is that.  Come.”  He reaches out and takes your finger.  Be grabs another one on the same hand.

“No, we must have help!”

“Nay,” Bob glares, “the decision is made.  We respect it.”  He pulls you in his direction.

“No,” Be fights the other way, “you must help!”

“Nay!”

“No!”

“Nay!”

“No!”

“Come on you two!”  You pull your hand away from both.  “What is this, tug of war on my hand?”

They both stare at you blankly.

You wave it away.  “The point is, it’s my decision not yours,” you point at Bob.  “And certainly not yours,” you point at Be.

The fae takes a step back, as if she had just been slapped; it makes you cringe.  What happens if you make an enemy of the fae?  There were stories of some very bad things!

“Very well,” Be turns away.  “Ladies,” all the pixies gathered came to attention, “prepare to do battle!”

Tiny sparkles of various hues and colors shoot off in all directions.  The evil spot in the sky is getting closer.

“Bob,” Be calls without turning around, “please lead this human back.  We don’t want the help.”  With that, Be zips toward the storm front.

Lightning cracks the sky, thunder rolls, and the wind begins to howl.  Treetops whip their branches as the fae houses begin to shake.

What Doesn't Kill You - Part 12

For a brief moment you see the dark lady’s eyes and remember the horror at her approach.  Your skin begins to prickle.

“Well?”  Bob The Pixie catches your eye.  “You have been given a gift from the holly wood tree, but you will not be forced to do this.  If you choose, I can take you home.”

Home.  It is safe at home.  You look back at Bob; his face is sympathetic.  If you chose to, he would not think any less.  Yet, the very thought of going home seems unappealing; almost.

Those teeth on the dark lady were real, and the last thing you want is to encounter them again.  You blurt the words out.  “I’m sorry, but I can’t do it.”

The chattering of fae goes silent.  In the silence, you can hear the beat of your own heart.  Though it took great effort to say the words, in the end you knew it was for the best.

Be moves quickly towards you.  “Oh, but you must!”  She looks around in fear.  “You must or all is in great peril.”

For the first time you notice the world of the pixies is not quite so bright, the lights they carry have dimmed down, and there is an evil patch of color in the sky.  Out of the darkness lightning flashes followed by a terrible crash of thunder.

“You see,” Be points at the evil in the sky, “it has already begun!”

What Doesn't Kill You - Part 11

They lead you to a shade tree.  A canopied bed of silk sheets and lavender trim is already waiting.  You sit down on the bed in wonder.

“Sleep.”  The fae with the purple light motions toward the bed.  “Rest.”

There is a popping sound behind you, and you hear the voice of Bob The Pixie.  “No you don’t!”

“Bob,” your eyelids are extremely heavy, “I’m really tired!”

“Nope,” he shakes his head, and snaps his fingers.  You open your eyes wide as the sleep vanishes.

He grins.  “What can be done with a spell can be undone.  Especially a sleep spell.”  He glares at the fae,“This is my human not yours,”  and turns back to you.  “The holly wood tree can be a portal to many places, but it sent you here for a specific gift, not to sleep.”

The fae with the purple light comes forward.  “Bob The Pixie, you have no right!”

“I am the guardian of this human,” he warns.  “It is my right.  If you have a gift, then you must give it.”

A murmur passes through the assembled fae.   The one with the purple light comes toward you.  “I am Bela Lugosi, but you may call me Be.”  She curtsies.  “Please, take no offense at our offering to rest.  It was only for your good.  However,” she narrows her eyes at the pixie, “Bob is correct.  It is my place to give you a gift.”

A second fae approaches, carrying a single purple petal with a lime-green throat.

“Please hold out your hand.”

You glance at Bob who gives a silent nod.  As you hold your hand out, palm up, the fae lays the petal in it.  Be sprinkles fae dust upon the petal, the fae begin to hum, and Be begins to sing.

“Sight uncanny comes to you, upon the petal clear.  It opens eyes to show surprise as magic items wander near.  Do not neglect the spell that’s set.  Do look and search the way.  The things it brings will open to your eyes a bright new day.”

As the words fade away, the petal dissolves absorbed into your skin.  You feel a tingling sensation as the magic takes hold.  With wonder in your eyes, you ask, “What did you do?”  For a moment you feel as if you could fly.

“You have been given a gift,” Be’s face glows with delight.  “A wondrous gift to fulfill a destiny.”

Bob clears his throat.  “And a mission,” he warns.  “The dark lady you met is not gone.  If you are willing to accept the challenge, then we must find the magic shards, track her down, and stop her from coming back into this world.  Are you willing to accept the challenge?”

What Doesn't Kill You - Part 10

The eyes of the tree stare into yours, beckoning you forward.  It is calm and serene, despite the attack of the skeletons.  You hear them approach, feel the hairs stand up on your body, but watch as your finger reaches toward the bark.

Bob The Pixie, diving from an attack, turns around and spots you.  “Wait!”

It is too late.  As you touch the tree, calmness settles in.  The tree offers peace and safety.  It appreciates you putting out the fire, and has chosen to give you a reward.

Music plays as the world you know fades from sight.  The skeletons are gone, and so is Bob.  You wheel around, trying to make some sense of what just happened.

In this place, it is nighttime.  You see the glow of tiny lights, shining in the distance.  There are flutters to your left and right.  As the flutters come closer, you see they are carrying tiny lanterns.  The beautiful wings of tiny fairies glow in the darkness.

“Welcome,” their voices call in chorus, “to the secret world that only we do know.  You have journeyed far and look so tired.  Would you not sit down and rest?”  Before you can blink, fireflies assemble in a ball of light not more than a foot away.

You feel the warmth, not so much as heat, but as love and goodwill.  It drives the exhaustion from your body, warming up your soul.  The air taste sweet; the trees sparkle in magic.  If you were here a thousand years, you could never tire of this place.

A thousand years, those thoughts make you think.  You remember the story of Rip Van Winkle who met up with mystical creatures and went to sleep for twenty years.  Could there really be truth in that story?

“Rest,” one of the fae with a beautiful purple light comes forward.  “You are tired and have faced many things.  You must rest for the journey is great.”

Untold Secrets - Part 10

There is a dripping to your right as you repeat the guard’s words.  “Not all of us agree with the council.”

“What was that?” Bob The Pixie comes back around.  “Where did you hear that?”

“The guard, he just told me.”  It had to be telepathy!

“I didn’t hear---” A grin spreads over Bob’s face.  “Ah, I see, no wonder!”  Bob ponders a moment.  “So they are setting up a coup d’etat and you are the catalyst!”

The knowledge makes you exhale.  “A revolution?”  In the stillness that follows you look around, listening to the dripping coming from a place on the wall.  It drops down into a natural bowl, containing water.

“Something has apparently been dirtying the pond, and it has sparked revolution.” Bob nods as he follows your gaze.  “That would explain the throbbing in your palm, and why we came here when the wand hit us.”

“So it wasn’t an accident,” the throbbing is on your mind.  “But what of Be?”

Bob reluctantly answers, “She has a good heart, but her way of going about it is not always sound.”

“Like trying to remove the--”  You look at your palm and remember how she had tried to force you.  “Was she trying to cut off my hand?”  The idea is frightening.

“I would hope not,” Bob shakes, “but when it comes to protecting her people, there is no end to what she might do.  If she felt too desperate, she might even make a deal with the dark lady herself.”

What Doesn't Kill You - Part 9

‘Two skeles down and four to go,’ you tell yourself as a shiver goes down your spine.

They are closing in now.  Something tries to grab your arm; another tries for your leg.  At the same time, the skeleton in front lunges with the log, jabbing straight for the chest.

The weight of the two skeletons behind jerks you off balance.  Rather than fight it, you go with it, tuck, and roll.

They had expected resistance.  Your added weight bears down upon them, landing hard on the one, and jerking loose of the other’s handhold.  The one with the log misses entirely, clobbering another skeleton instead.

Coming to your feet, you can see Bob has most of the flames out around the tree, except for those at your heels; you stomp them out quickly.

“Charge!” Bob roars out.  There is a swoosh in the air, and something like a bullet flies toward the approaching skeletons.

He hits, driving through the vertebrae of one, and the leg bone of another.  Both drop.  That leaves three, but the one with the log isn’t fazed.  He stands his ground determined to land a blow on the small pixie.

A strange sound calls behind you, and realize it is the holly wood tree.  Turning around, you stare into its face.  It speaks no words and yet--yet, you can understand it.  What’s it saying?  Touch its trunk?

To the right of the face, you reach out just as the other two skeletons come into view.  They are heading toward Bob.  You start to pull back.  Every fiber of your being says go help Bob whatever it costs, yet the tree is insistent.  One touch.  If you do that, the tree will be satisfied, and you can go help Bob.

What Doesn't Kill You - Part 8

Pound, pound, pound.

Your hands tremble with each strike against your makeshift weapon, and your blocks are becoming weaker.  A wicked laugh escapes the skeleton’s jaws, and his eyes flash with power.  From the corner of your eye, you spot one of the skeletons which Bob had downed rise to his feet.  Can a skeleton be dazed?  This one certainly looks like it.

The one in front of you lunges forcing you to scoot to the right.  Inch by inch he times his attacks, guiding you back toward the tree.

Of course, that’s where you would rather be anyway, closer to Bob, but why does the skeleton want you there too?

The ground becomes less level.  There are holes chaotically dug to catch the unwary foot.  You jump, dodge, and maneuver, but no matter what you try, the skeleton forces his will upon you.  At any moment, he could finish you off.

The smell of smoke makes you sneeze.  You are forced to walk backwards as you fight with the sun shining in your eyes.  The sound of bones tells you there are at least two additional skeletons: one behind and another coming from the side.

What Doesn't Kill You - Part 7

It is the bone knocking that alerts you.

You turn just in time to avoid a slap by a skeleton hand that would have knocked you silly.  Without a second thought, you snatch up a burning log and slam the skeleton in the middle.

The bones crunch loudly, flying in all directions.  Since it no longer has a middle, the top and bottom of the skeleton crash to the ground.

“Batter, batter up!”  Bob calls, appearing beside you.  “Great swat!  Can you do it again?”

Both skeletons Bob faced are down on the ground, but one is moving to rise.  Another comes up from the other side of the tree.  He’s fanning the flames so they will burn faster.

“No you don’t!” You jump forward brandishing the log.  He jumps back, picks up his own longer, narrower, log, and stands ready.   His skull eyes seem to glow in delight.

“Swordfight!” Bob leaps with glee.  “This will be fun!”

“But Bob, I don’t know how to sword fight!”

“You don’t?”  Bob flies between you and the skeleton.  “Look, uh, mister,” he studies the skeleton’s pose.  “Uh, mister swordsman skeleton.  You see, my friend really doesn’t know how to fight, and well, if you’d just put the log down---”

The skeleton laughs, swishing the log in Bob’s direction.  Bob leaps back, and shrugs.  “Sorry, I tried.”

“Thanks.”

The skeleton lunges.  You parry the blow, but only barely.

“Bob, the fire!”  You throw a look at the groaning tree.

“Fire, gotcha!”

Bob takes off to put out the flame, while you parry a second blow.  The skeleton is playing with you.  He knows you can’t sword fight, and he’s going to enjoy the kill.

What Doesn't Kill You - Part 6

The striking of bones catches your attention, and you see skeletons leaping up from their spots around the tree.  They were leaving nothing to chance; they were going to watch you burn.

Bob The Pixie launches into the air, zipping over and under the arms of the nearest skeleton.  “Well,” he calls back between zips, “What are you waiting for?  Come on!”

In the mere seconds you’ve delayed, you size has grown by an inch.  Using your feet, you push against the inside of the tree, forcing your upper torso to squeeze out.

The path through the flames is no longer wide enough, and Bob is delaying the skeletons in an effort to help you.  You brush dirt on both sides, fighting to put the flame out while pushing with all your might.

You are not moving.  Your legs shake.  You can feel the sides of the exit biting into your hips.  With a last ditch effect, you kick against the inside of the tree.

The wood groans; you would swear the tree is in pain.  With a sudden realization, you turn and look up, seeing a face.  The tree is looking down at you as you call out, “Help me, please!”

In wonder you see the face on the tree nod, the pressure releases, and you scoot out quickly.

Black marks show at the base of the holly wood tree, and you realize it wasn’t you that was causing the pain, but the fire around it.  The flame must go out, but Bob is still busy.  Knocking dirt over the fire, you begin to go around the tree.

What Doesn't Kill You - Part 5

“Heave!” Bob The Pixie can see you getting larger by the moment.  Your head is now touching where your hand just was.   “By all that’s magic, hurry!”
Both of you strike the barrier.  It tries to shift, but still remains firm.  A bit of the burning smoke wafts in.

“What have they done?” Bob scratches his chin.

Where your head was is now your back; you are forced to hunker down.  “Bob, we need ideas!”

“Okay, okay,” he pretends to move back imaginary sleeves, because he doesn’t have any real ones, doubles up both fist, stares at the barrier, and then sighs.  “Sorry, got nothing.”

In an effort to avoid getting poked by the wood, your size forces you to your knees.  You’ve had enough.  With both palms, you strike the barrier.  “Move!”

There is a crack, and you realize the larger you grow, the stronger you become.

“Hit it again!” Bob shouts.

With Bob’s voice ringing in your ears, you palm it again with hands that have grown larger still.

The crack is distinct, but your size has forced you flat on the ground.  If you continue at this rate, you won’t be able to crawl out the hole.  With a last ditch effort, you single hand palm it.

The barrier burst back shooting sparks and flames in all directions.  The skeletons have built a fire around the tree.  It seems they wanted you both burnt alive.

“Crawl,” Bob points, “I’ll clear the flame!”

Grabbing up loose dirt, he creates a small pixie whirlwind to cut a path across the flames.  You grab both sides of the exit and heave, knowing already it might be too late.

What Doesn't Kill You - Part 4

The smell of smoke wafts around you.  You open your eyes, but there is no light.  Smoke?  Is something on fire?  The image of the skeleton comes rolling back; it was attempting to reach inside the hollow.  There is a strange gurgling sound to your left.  With a tentative hand, you reach out until you feel a body.

Jerking your hand back, you sorely wish you had a light.

The noise stops and something sneezes.

"Bless you."

The sleepy voice of Bob asks, "What?  What did you say?"

"Bless you."

"Don't say that, not in here!"  Bob The Pixie looks around.  "Don't you know where we are?"

"Bob, do I look like a pixie?"  You stop for a moment, remembering you are still as small as one.  "Let me rephrase that.  Bob, I'm not a pixie.  How can I see in the dark?  All I can do is listen to your voice; I don't know where we are."

He laughs.  "We're in holly wood.  Can't you at least smell it?"

You do smell something, but what it is you cannot say.  "Hollywood?  The only Hollywood I know is a place in Los Angeles, California."

"Really?" Bob is all ears.  "So what do they do in your holly wood?"

"Bob, what is your hollywood?"

"Not hollywood, holly wood.  It is one of the most scared trees of the pixies!"

He acts like that explains it.  When you don't say anything, he continues.

"Surely you know about---"

You clear your throat.  "Like you didn't know what a cop was, right?"

"Okay, okay. How about I quote the pixie poem?"  He takes a deep breath.

"Hold the holly in your hand, this wood is magic in the land.  Say the words, 'Do dum day', and pixie magic is on its way."

"Do dum day?"  Something begins to happen to you; gradually you begin to grow.

"Not now!" Bob panics.  He moves toward the front of the hollow, and finds that something is blocking the exit.  "They've trapped us in!  We can't get out!"

"At least that explains why it's so dark."  Your body is growing; you can feel it.  "What just happened?"

Bob moves back to your side, takes you by the arm, and guides you toward the blocked exit.  He says in a very monotone voice, "Just stay calm.  Everything is going to be fine.  We just have a little problem of getting you outside."

"Bob, what's happening to me?"

"By using those words inside a holly wood tree, you've negated the shrink spell. You're returning to normal size."

The horror of it hits you, but I'm inside!"

He guides you to the exit.  "Stay calm.  If we push together---"

Both of you slam against it; it barely moves.  Your head bumps into something.  You reach up and feel the top of the wooden cavity.  "We better hurry!"

"Heave," he shouts.

What Doesn't Kill You - Part 3

"Time to go!" Bob zips over their heads; he is already higher than they can reach.

The skeletons begin to speak faster, trying to finish the spell before you’re out of sight.  There is a funny popping sound, and oddly enough you start to feel sleepy.  One glance at Bob and you know you are in trouble.  He's snoring.  Thankful he drifts to the ground just past the clearings edge.

The green glow has gone away, but, try as you must, your eyelids keep trying to close.  Through several blinks you see a hollow at the base of a tree.  It is dark, but there is no time to consider what might be inside.

Grabbing Bob by the collar, you drag him toward the hollow.  The skeletons are running in your direction.  You can feel their feet pound the ground; they are almost there.  With a finally heave, you pull Bob into the hollow; ducking back into the darkness.

The skeletons fan out, striking at plants and odd shapes, pushing aside the dirt.  A skull eye suddenly appears, staring straight into the hollow, its darkened socket a reminder that this creature is not alive.

It pokes a boney finger in, it is heading straight for you, but your eyes will no longer stay open.  Instead of moving, you fall fast asleep.

What Doesn't Kill You - Part 2

It thrusts from the ground, dragging you high into the air.  Other skeletons are rising all around the campfire.

"Jump!" Bob The Pixie calls, dropping the branch he is dragging.  "Jump and I'll catch you!"

The skeleton is now about four foot tall.  He turns his head and stares with those dark, empty, eye sockets.  That does it; you jump.

You are falling.  The wind whips around and you can see the ground coming up.  The skeleton's hand flashes by; he’s trying you hit you.

Something grabs your arm and swoops high into the air.  A moment later Bob hovers, and you both stare down at the campfire.  Five skeletons have risen and they all begin to chant.

"What was, is not, and not, will be.  We call to bring the Dark you see.  Beware for when it rises here.  Whoever's found, it will not spare."

The fire shoots up; a green glow takes the camp.  You glance toward the forest edge, but the Banshee has disappeared; at least she wasn't wailing.

One by one the skeletons begin to dance around.  The tempo picks up; the dance becomes faster.  Their feet start moving so fast you can hardly make them out.

With a sudden stop, the campsite goes quiet, and one by one the skeletons raise an arm and point at Bob and you.  They begin to chant a magic spell.

The Skull In The Water - Part 10 / What Doesn't Kill You - Part 1

Horror grips you; you cannot turn away.  The dark lady's eyes stare into yours.  You scream.

Bob The Pixie leaps into the air from his place around the fire.  His eyes dart both directions.  "What's going on?"

Cold sweat pours off you as you open your eyes, listening to your own ragged breath.  "It was only a dream," you tell yourself.  "The dark lady is gone!"  The ground around you rumbles.

"Dark lady?"  Bob descends back to the earth.  "You had a nightmare?"  He waves it away.  "Perfectly natural after what you've been through, but don't worry, there is nothing to fear here now."  Bob glances over at the fire.  "We might need more wood though."

The heat of the fire has burned down, but there is enough to knock off the chill.
"You're not going to leave me."

"I'm just stepping out to get some wood," he reassures.  "No reason to fear.  Look," he points toward the forest edge.  "The Banshee is still standing guard."

"That's exactly what happened last time; she just stood there and screamed.  I like alarm systems as well as the next person, but if the cops don't come---" you shrug and slap the ground.  It rumbles again.

Bob looks like a deer in the headlights.

"Cops, you know, police?"

"Ahhh," Bob grins and slaps his own knee.  "Slang, you're using slang!"

"Sure," you shake your head.  "Bob, you really need to get out more."

"That's exactly what I keep telling Jonna," he nods agreement.  The fire crackles and jars his memory.  "Right, wood!"  He lifts into the air and heads toward the forest.

You turn around and huff.  It was bad enough you had to spend the night around the dark lady's campfire, but on top of it, Bob still hasn't restored you to your full size.  He had made a good case; it was easier to stay warm this way, but that didn't change the situation.

You kick the ground and it rumbles back.  You tap the ground and it rumbles back harder.  You move to stand and feel the ground shift under your feet.

"Bob!"  You leap as the ground beneath you gives way.  The only stable place appears to be in the campfire, and you're not going in there.

The ground around you is shaking; something is stirring beneath its surface.  Cavities form and you trip, tumbling into one.

Dust stirs everywhere; you find it hard to breath.  As you hit the bottom, you notice a white reflective glow.  You'd know that glow from anywhere.  It's a finger bone to a skeleton reflecting firelight, and it's rising out of the earth all by itself.

The Skull In The Water - Part 9

The Skull In The Water - Part 9

The wail of the Banshee drowns out all sound.  The red-eyed beasts turn wide-eyed to stare.  The clearing lights up in dazzling colors, driving back the darkness.

The dark lady screams, first as a tortured soul, and then begins a maniacal laugh.  "You cannot kill me Bob The Pixie.  You can only destroy this vessel!"

Bob moves to the side of the cage and pushes at the crystalized ropes.  They shatter into a million pieces creating a chain reaction.  The reaction heads straight for the dark lady.  Stepping from the cage, he rises up into the air and points a tiny finger.

"I have done nothing.  You did this to yourself.  For those who chose unnatural ways destroy their mind in stealth.  Beware of your return, as nature’s watching now.  If you should choose to again abuse, your soul shall not be allowed."  He throws out some pixie dust.

As the dust touches the dark lady, there is a burst of red light and shooting stars.  As the light fades away, the dark lady is gone.

You tentatively step through the bars of the cage.  Even as you watch, the crystal shards fade away.
Bob swoops down grinning ear to ear.  "Well, I told you humans didn't have fangs!"

"But Bob," you stare at the red-eyed beasts.  "What do we do about them?"

He swoops around with glee.  "Watch!"

The red-eyed beasts begin to morph, shrink, and change, the red disappearing from their eyes.  In a moment, you know just what they are.

"Ordinary wolves?  But how did you do it?"

"With the dark lady gone, so was her influence over these wolves.  Whatever she did to trick them into becoming her minions, they will not do that again.  So," he drops to the ground.  "What do you think about a bite to eat?"

You cringe.  "Did you have to say bite?"

The Skull In The Water - Part 8

The tiny ropes reach the cage, but instead of entering they begin the chore of weaving themselves upon it.

In anger, the dark lady throws a curse.  "You shall never leave!  Never!"  Little by little the firelight is replaced by the darkness of gloom.

"Bob, do something!"

"I am," he suddenly smiles looking around the cage.  "Don't you see?  Her magic isn't that powerful.  The ropes she sent can't penetrate; they have to stay outside."

Even the heat from the fire can no longer be felt, and the cold of the forest creeps in.  You look around not convinced.  "So that helps us how?"

"Don't you see?" Bob begins to skip around the cage.  "It's the natural magic of the pixies!  It's nature battling against her will, and she doesn't like it!"  He gives a big grin.  "Watch this!"  With one swoop of his hand, a shower of golden pixie dust flows in all directions.  As it touches the cage, the ropes begin to sparkle turning transparent like glass.

Through the distorted view is the dark lady, glowering with rage.  She points her finger at the cage.  "No, you cannot!  I am in control!"

The tiny ropes do not listen, but continue to change into beautiful crystal lengths.  The origins of the ropes are clear now.  They came from the dress that the dark lady wears.

"No!"  She tries to pull back, but it is too late; the crystal ropes have taken hold.  As they touch the hem of her garment, a dazzling light shines.

The Skull In The Water - Part 7

The red-eyed beasts leap as Bob The Pixie pulls you toward the cage.  Two of the beasts crash together in mid air, while a third dodges to the right, and a fourth pauses before the jump.  The sound of the growls is deafening.

"I won't fit!" you yell at Bob.  "There must be another way!"

Without saying a word, he tosses some pixie dust in your direction.  You know that look.  "Ceres Croftomos!"

Your whole body begins to shrink.  Thank goodness so did your clothes!  "Bob, I don't want to go into the cage!"

Now that you are smaller, it is much easy for him to pull you in.  "We'll be safe in here for the moment," he pants.  "I need time to think."

"But you shrunk me!"

"Hey now, don't knock being small.  I'm rather fond of it myself."

"Without my permission!"

The cage lurches from side to side as paws both strike, and try to push through the bars.  The light winks out, hidden behind the fur of all the beasts trying to get in.

The dark lady rises to her feet, elegantly stands, and growls, "Enough!"

The cage stops moving as the beasts back up.  The red-orange of the firelight filters in.

"You were not wise Bob The Pixie to stay within my cage.  You shall never escape from my hand now!"

As the last sentence drops away, tiny ropes begin to weave, heading for the cage.

You turn to Bob.  "Times up!"

"I know, I know, I'm thinking!"

The Skull In The Water - Part 6

Bob The Pixie hollers, "Turn your head to the right!"

'The right,' you think.  'By turning to the right, I'll expose my neck even more. Is Bob trying to get me killed? No, no, must trust Bob!'

With emense effort, you force your gaze away.  The red-eyed beast are all on their feet, standing at attention, and waiting for a signal.  You have no doubt that when the dark lady is done, she will disgard you as dinner for her pets.

Something changes in your brain, and you notice a huge moon glowing through the trees.  Though the dark lady is there, you no longer have to obey her commands.  It is like Bob said, break the gaze!

You shove, knocking the dark lady backwards.  She trips, falling on top of the fire.

Flames and embers shoot up around her as she howls in anger.  With one tap of your foot, you knock the pixie bag closer to Bob.  He grabs it, pulls out some pixie dust, and tosses it around.

"Ceres Bolium!" he shouts causing the cage to begin to grow.  When the space between the bars gets large enough, he slips through not even bothering with the door.

The dark lady screams; though the flames assault her, they do not burn.  She struggles to her feet as the cage grows large enough to hit her, knocking her away.

Reattaching his pixie bag, he shouts up at you.  "Head toward the beach!"

"No," you counter, "not until I know you're safe."

The growling around you grows in volume.  As if they know what was said, two of the beast circle behind, cutting off the exit.

There is a stillness in the air, a warning through the trees, and the Banshee continues to howl.

Someone is definitely going to die!

The Skull In The Water - Part 5

You jump forward, miss a step, and trip.  Struggling to your feet, all the red eyes turn to stare.  A deep growl comes from all around the circle, and you see the pack leader stand to his feet.

"Now, now," the dark lady calms the beast.  "Remember, we were expecting this one too."  She turns to smile in your direction, the long fangs completely visible.  "So you would like to join our fire?"

Bob The Pixie rushes to the wall of the cage shaking his head vehmently.  He points a finger at the pixie dust.

You begin to relax, caught in the eyes of the dark lady.

"That's it my pretty.  There's nothing to fear.  Come closer child so I may take a better look."

Your feet begin to move against your will, slowly as if through molasses. An image of a friend sitting on the beach flashes through your mind.  'She is a friend,' you tell yourself, but a part of you won't believe it.  A part of you still sees the dark lady for what she really is.

"No," Bob shouts, "don't look at the eyes!"

One step, two.  You can hear the beating of your heart, the flowing of blood in your veins.  The closer you get, the louder they sound, and all the time you hear the lady's whispered words, 'Come closer, come closer.'

You are there, standing only inches from the face with the fangs, but you cannot turn away.  You watch as your body leans forward, obeying the dark lady's every word.  She turns your head gently, hungrily watching the pulse on your neck.

"No!" Bob shouts out, striking the cage so hard it rattles back and forth.  "No!" he throws himself against the small door, over and over in an effort to break it open.

Something pings; it is a tiny sound but nonetheless there.  The cage has scooted closer to the pixie dust.  He stretches his hand between the bars, reaching, reaching.  His fingers can touch the bag, but cannot grab hold.

A low wail begins to issue from the Banshee near the clearing.  That sound is the hearld of death, and you can see yours approaching in the shape of long sharp teeth.

The Skull In The Water - Part 4

Branches whip against your skin, but despite the poor lighting, you push on.  As your vision adjusts, you feel the hairs standing up on your arms.

"So you follow the dark lady too?"  A broken voice comes out of the darkness; it is beside you just short of a wail.

Eyes go wide as you realize the reason.  "You are a Banshee.  You are an omen of death!"

"I search for another lead by a dream," the banshee nods.  "If death is to come, you will hear my scream."

"Then hurry!"  You scan the forest floor looking for the way Bob The Pixie went.  "We must save him!"

The Banshee nods, casting a tiny bit of sparkles.  They attach to something in the air, making it glow a dull red.  "He is that way."

You run, the cold feeling of the night seeping into your bones.  The motion warms your extremities, but not your heart.  It is then you spot the fire in the middle of a clearing.  Four-footed beasts with red eyes surround the perimeter.  In a cage by the center is Bob.  His bag of pixie dust has been removed and placed just out of reach.

"Feeling better, my pretty?" the dark lady slips from the darkness toward Bob.  "Is not the fire warm?  Is not there food to eat?"  She cackles.  "To taste the blood of a pixie, it has never been done by my kind.  For each species I draw from, the strength and power are mine."

The Banshee appears beside you.  "Quickly, enter the circle!"

Red eyes; the four-footed beasts are everywhere, though they have not seen you yet.  Do you dare?

The Skull In The Water - Part 3

Water sloshes around your legs; the heat is definitely gone.  You step out upon the shore drying them as best you can, while picking up your shoes and socks lying on the bank.

There is no sound.  Even the birds have stopped to listen.  Bob The Pixie whispers in your ear as you don your footwear, "I think we're being watched!"

Moving toward the forest edge, he peers into the darkness, but all he sees is a dark smokey cloud.

With a sigh he relaxes turning around.  "She has to be gone.  There is no other explanation."  The dark smokey cloud begins to thicken. "After all," he continues, "I do have Pixie sight!"

You watch in horror as the dark cloud forms into a hand, solidifies, and descends toward the pixie.
"Bob!"

Bob wheels but it is too late.  The hand wraps its inky fingers around him, holding him tight.  He struggles to reach his pixie dust, but he cannot free his hands.  "Run!" he cries out.  "Save yourself!"

But before you can decide what to do, Bob is dragged into the forest vanishing from sight.  Somewhere within, you can hear a distant growl.  Without another thought, you leap in to follow.

The Skull In The Water - Part 2

"Den?" Bob The Pixie repeats.  "Did she say den?"

You nod slowly.  The hidden growls increase; there are at least four more somewhere in the foilage.
The sun, which was above the horizon, dips into the bright blue water.  Rays shoot out stretching shadows toward the forest edge.

"Not now my pretties," the woman looks from right to left.  "The time for that is later."

Bob The Pixie swallows.  "Er, later?"

"Why yes," she turns smiling back at Bob.  "Surely you'll join us for dinner?"

A whip of chilling wind catches you from behind.  As the sun goes down, so does the heat of the day.  Though the water is warm, it will not remain that way for long.  Unfortuantely, you are still standing in it.

You whisper to Bob, "We can't stand here forever, we'll die of exposure, but if we go with her---"

"We uh," Bob listens to the low growls, glancing toward the left and right.  "We, uh, appreciate your offer, but---"

The woman's smile drops.  "They will only harm upon my command.  You have my word."  Her inviting smile returns.

Bob turns to you.  "We have her word."

"Come, come," the woman steps back into the shadows of the forest.  "It will be much better to have a cozy warm fire with a nice full stomach, than to stay out here after the sun sets."

Bob takes a deep breath.  "Fine, but only one night."

As she moves back further into the forest, so do the growls.  "That's all I need," her voice laughs softly getting further away.  A moment later, the growls disappear.

You ask, "Is she still there?"

Bob The Pixie looks toward the forest.  "There's only one way to find out."

The Skull In The Water - Part 1

"Humans don't have long teeth!"  Bob The Pixie bursts out laughing.  "No, no, no, someone's pulling your leg."  He picks the skull up letting the water run out of the eye sockets.  The white skull glows brightly in the sunlight as evening approachs.  Bob turns around holding up the skull.  "Right?"

He studies your face and then frowns.  "I am right, right?  Humans don't have---"  There is a flutter behind you and his eyes go wide.  "What was that?"

You shake your head.

He sighs with relief.  "Right, humans don't have long sharp pointed teeth!"  He chuckles to himself thinking, "But what if they aren't human---"

Out of sight, a growl comes from your right, and another issues from the left.  You can just make out shadowy, beedy, eyes reflecting the light of the waning sun.

Branches snap heading in your direction.  There is movement in the shadows.  A female with wings as black as night steps out at the edge of the forest.  A crow sits warily on her shoulder, staring.

As she turns to study both of you, a smile crosses her lips.  It reveals two long sharp teeth located in the upper jaw.

"Welcome to my forest Bob The Pixie and friend.  Will you not enter into our den?"
